The engine is mated to a six-speed select shift automatic transmission, but the higher-performance EcoBoost gets the advantage of steering wheel paddle shifters.The optional 2013 Ford Flex EcoBoost twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 engine, available only with all-wheel drive, is unchanged at 365 hp and 350 lb-ft. It transforms the family-friendly crossover into a rocket, providing huge dollops of torque that make the Flex feel as quick as some sport compacts.
We drove an EcoBoost Flex only briefly, but had plenty of fun on the Oregon Coast Highway. For the 2013 Ford Flex model year, the Ford Flex undergoes a mild refresh, adopting a new front end as well as getting some interior and performance upgrades. Ford’s updated the styling of its boxy seven-seater, offering a front-end treatment more avantgrade than that of the previous car.
Changes to the 2013 Ford Flex interior make a notable difference. Gone is the ugly four-spoke steering wheel, replaced by a much nicer three-spoke design. Look through the steering wheel and you’ll find completely new gauges which are similar to the ones found in the Ford Fusion Hybrid, minus the Hybrid drive-train readout. With the speedometer right smack in the middle it is now much easier to keep an eye on your speed – not that that’s of much concern with the Flex.

The Flex stands out in a big way. Linear lines all around create a shape that is clean and simple, yet strong and bold, upright and upscale. This is innovative design, bold and contemporary, distinctively different from the wide lift gate to the sculpted new front end with bold lettering on the hood that spells FLEX.
Similar aesthetic changes were first shown on the 2013 Ford Flex Titanium trim, which apparently proved to be popular with Flex buyers. On the Titanium, the look was more chiseled and brutish. Other changes to the headlights and grille give the 2013 Flex a softer, cleaner but somewhat anonymous demeanor. A new Appearance Package offers two-toned exterior colors, leather seats, unique door trim panels and other upgrades available on the Limited and SEL trims.
Competitor: The Flex interior update isn’t too dissimilar to what has been done with the 2013 Ford Taurus, just swapping out the steering wheel, center console and instrument cluster with My Ford Touch.
