Exactly one month out from its 2010 Paris Motor Show world premiere, Citroen has released the first images and details of the all-new 2011 Citroen DS4 premium hatch. The 2011 Citroen DS4 is the second vehicle revealed under the French marquee’s new DS styling line is also bound for Australian shores and is expected to go on sale in the third quarter of 2011.

The new Citroen DS 4 mixes humdrum hatchback underpinnings with a more adventurous styling direction on the outside, and more luxurious materials on the inside. And although the 2011 Citroen DS4 sticks with five doors (the five-door C3 morphed into the three-door DS3) it does have unique styling.

Based on Citroën’s C4, the 2011 Citroen DS4 features represents a step up in luxury from the standard car. Like the DS3, 2011 Citroen DS4 is aimed at premium compact five-door hatchbacks, such as the Audi A3. The styling is more refined than that of the standard C4, with taut, flowing lines. 2011 Citroen DS4 also does away with much of the busy appearance we bemoaned on the DS3.

Like the DS3, the 2011 Citroen DS4 features LED daytime running lights. Unlike the DS3, which features them in a recessed vertical strip, the 2011 Citroen DS4 LEDs are integrated elegantly around the fog lights. The 2011 Citroen DS4 also sports a blacked-out B-pillar, a styling cue similar to the DS3′s floating B-pillar. Hidden rear door handles help to enhance the smooth look of the 2011 Citroen DS4 and chrome trim completes the exterior.

The 2011 Citroen DS4 interior is just as elegant as the exterior, with high-quality, textured leather seats available in five colors, including several two-tone options. Citroen also gives buyers the option of having the dashboard and door panels wrapped in cowhide. Chrome accents around the gauges and air vents give the 2011 Citroen DS4 interior an even more upscale feel without being overwrought.

It is still recognizably C4-based, but there’s now a new nose, more curvaceous flanks, and hidden rear door handles. Citroen says the 2011 Citroen DS4 look combines ‘coupé style with 2+2 door practicality’, and because it’s designed to be stylish and attractive there’s a smaller boot too, down from the C4’s 408-litres to 370-litres.
The 2011 Citroen DS4 Rivals
Unlike the DS3, which uses the same powertrains as the standard C3, Citroen will offer more powertrain options in the 2011 Citroen DS4. There are a choice of five engines in the 2011 Citroen DS4, two of which are diesel, and available in 108bhp and 158bhp guises. The three petrol engines are all based on the 1.6-litre turbo co-developed with BMW, and beyond the familiar 118bhp and 152bhp variants, there’s the same 197bhp unit that’s found in the Peugeot RCZ.

Another change from the C4 is that all 2011 Citroen DS4 are equipped with either six-speed manual or automatic transmissions, whereas the C4 can be had with a five-speed manual. 2011 Citroen DS4 prices start at around £18k for the entry level VTi 120 DSign. The Citroen DS4 price rise to around £24k for the range-topping THP 200 DSport.

Considering the comparative strength of competition at that level (VW Golf, Ford Focus, Alfa Romeo Giulietta) Citroen’s audacious attempt to produce something different is laudable, but ultimately the car doesn’t feel special enough to successfully span the different segments it borrows from. Where the smaller hatchback was conceived as a straight competitor to BMW’s Mini, Citroen claims the 2011 Citroen DS4 has no direct rivals as it combines a coupe profile with five-door practicality and the raised driving position of a crossover.
